December Sessions

Discovery Ed, iTunes U - cancelled due to lack of interest

Dec. 21.
Since we are not going to have Discovery Ed next year I am thinking we could just talk quickly about it and show them how to download movies for this year but not focus on any other features. (We need to talk about the download file type.) I am comfortable covering Discovery Ed if that is ok with you guys. It sounds like Jayne is pretty comfortable navigating and finding resources on iTunes U so I was thinking she could show how to search and maybe download into iTunes.

Cindy, you had mentioned that you found some good PDF resources (was it for Native Americans or something else?). Would you like to show everyone where they are? I think it would be nice for us to show through out the session that there are multiple types of free resources available; not just videos. How long do you think you will need to show that?

We have 50 min total assuming we start on time. I would say we spend no more then 10 min on Discovery Ed. Maybe spend about 10 or 15 min on searching and downloading in iTunes U, a few minutes (maybe 5 or 10) for the PDFs and the rest of the time letting the teachers search on their own and ask questions.

Discovery Education: 10 min
Use Curriculum Standards Search to show example: Academic Content Standards/Science/Grade 4/2010/ Physical Science 1/PS1.1/PS1.1.a
Select Movie: Water Smart: The Sun, Water Cycle, and Climate
Can download full movie or segments
Select download type, Download movie segment
Options for Movies:
Show/play full screen
Load into iTunes library
Can find movie file in downloads folder

Can set preferences to always download as a quicktime or other file type:

November Sessions

eno Board Introduction

Jason Dempsey will be conducting the training. I followed up with him on Oct. 27 to re-confirm. He will provide a basic introduction to using the board in a classroom.

Grant Writing:

Use document uploaded on staff Tech Tues site. Sessions are set up so teachers can bring an idea for a grant and use the session time to gather information and complete each section of the handout. The handout is designed to cover multiple types of grant requirements. Teachers should be able to apply the information in the handout to an actual grant application. If they come to the sessions with a specific grant in mind they could fill out the specific requirements for that grant instead of the handout. The series is designed to provide time for the teachers to gather information for grant projects and work on proposals. Instructors can consult with teachers to help with wording, ideas and other guidence. There really isn't any presentation planned. These sessions will provide actual work time for the teachers attending.

Excel: Working with Student Data Outline

3 Steps to Organize Your Data

  • Step 1: Prepare Your File to Sort with the 'Edit, Find, Replace' tool

    • replace + with above
    • * with near (need to find ~*)
    • - with below
  • Step 2: Sort Your Data by multiple categories

    • Practice: sort by: M (LT) or S (NS)
    • Multiple Sort: IG (RP, AV)
    • Copy/paste students to new tab
      • apple/control copy or add column, add number to each student, resort
      • Rename Tab
  • Step 3: Color-Code by changing text color and/or adding fill color/highlighting

    • above-green
    • near-yellow
    • below-red
    • Can also use conditional formatting

If time allows we will also work on copying and pasting cells that are not connected or touching from one tab to another using the control or apple key.

Presenter Notes:
Find/Replace symbols on student data spreadsheets (some symbols designated by the state will not sort): when finding/replacing an asterisk (*) you must use a tilde (~) in front of the asterisk for excel to find it.
Sort
Color code based on score (Intermediate skill: conditional format for color coding score-maybe a later session)

Use the apple key to select non-contiguous cells to copy/past to another tab/ss. Cells must be from the same columns:
If you select cells A1 and B1 then the cells in the rows below must also be from columns A and B in order to copy. You can select entire rows at a time with the apple key (PC: control key) to paste into a different tab.
Email teachers and ask them to bring a file to work on
